As long as I've had the motor skills to be able to hold a controller, I've been a gamer. I was introduced to video games via our family's Atari 2600, and as the years passed I traded up to the Nintendo Entertainment System.
I participated in the 16-bit console wars and lived to tell the tale.
I spent hours in front of my powerhouse IBM 386sx 25MHz computer, with a whopping 4 megs of RAM, and sporting a SoundBlaster 16 soundcard, playing everything from the AD&D Goldbox Games, to the early first-person shooters like Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, to strategy titles like Syndicate and X-COM.
I watched as upstart Sony broke into the market and thoroughly dominated my beloved Sega Saturn that I paid $400 for when it first came out, forcing me to bond with my PlayStation and starting a long, deep seated hatred for Sony Computer Entertainment.
I love gaming, which is why I started this blog.
A little about myself: I am 28-years-old and I currently reside in a suburb of the Metro Detroit area. I am a self-professed media junkie and total nerd.
The purpose of this blog is not to compete with excellent sites like Joystiq and Kotaku. I'll be surprised if anybody reads this at all, frankly. No, the purpose of this blog is solely for my own entertainment. I love to write, and I love to write about video games. My sister blog, Media Junkie (clever title, I know) will cover the rest of the major entertainment forms such as music, movies, and printed word. Player 1 Start is strictly a gaming blog where I can review both new and old games, give my opinion on hot button issues dealing with games and the gaming industry, and write silly little features to my heart's content.
Occasionally, I may post a news item found on another site when I have something to say about it, but if you've stumbled upon this page expecting behind-the-scenes interviews and breaking stories, you're in the wrong place. Visit one of the aforementioned sites for all that stuff.
Lastly, I am an equal opportunity gamer. I hold no allegiance to any particular company or their console. Consoles are merely a delivery method for the games we play, and while I may not like certain company's business practices, I refuse to let that get in the way of me enjoying the games on their respective systems.
My current gaming setup includes a Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, Sony PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox and Xbox 360, and a Nintendo Wii all hooked up through a Pelican Component Video A/V Switcher. All systems are hooked up via component video cables (or S-Video in the case of the Saturn and Dreamcast), to a Samsung 40" LCD HDTV, capable of 1080p resolution. Everything is run through a 5.1 surround sound system, with my PC only a quarter turn of my chair away (though its specs aren't worth note anymore). I own over 600 games for just those systems alone, not counting some of the older systems I still own but do not have hooked up.
If you do stop by and read some posts, I do hope you enjoy them. Leave me a comment telling me you agree, or telling me I suck, or whatever suits your fancy. Just remember: I reserve the right to edit/delete/ban whatever and whomever I see fit. This is not a democracy. I am not a big proponent of censorship, but comments that are exceedingly idiotic and/or vulgar/racist/sexist/homophobic/etc. will not be tolerated. Keep in mind I said "exceedingly". Swearing is OK, just make sure you have a point.
