Great piece.

I've long said that sadly, any Prince remastering/reissue campaign will be posthumous. I generally stick to the vinyl LPs at this point, aside from situations that require portability. It's stunning how bad so many of those albums sound.

For someone who was so far ahead of musical trends for over a decade, he's so far behind the curve of contemporary culture, it's sad.

Terrific article and also a highly accurate account of the sad state of affairs between Prince and Warner Brothers. To be totally fair, Warner Brothers aren't exactly known for their enthusiasm for remastering/re-issuing their back catalog either. Other factors such as the culture shift after Lenny Waronker & Mo Ostin's departure from WB (They used to believe in investing and nurturing their roster); lawsuits against his then management team Cavallo, Ruffalo & Fargnoli; personal loss of his son Boy Gregory to Pfeiffer syndrome; divorce from Mayte Garcia; then conversion to Jehovah's Witnesses which teaches Separateness all play a part in maintaining the rift between the two magnates. Last year, Prince toured Sydney and I could not bring myself to go because it was just too sad to witness someone who once was THE cutting edge of music reflecting on his past glories with a greatest hits package. I'd like to see his music live on, but without any remasters, it is a tragic loss to the arts.
